May 29 @ 12:00 pm - May 31 @ 12:00 pm

LPPANS and the Nova Scotia Planning Directors Association are hosting this year’s Planning Conference at the Westin Nova Scotian in Halifax, May 29-31, 2019.

The theme is “Housing for All: Sharing Our Stories”

KEYNOTES

CORD SOEHLKE – In 1997, Cord Soehlke started to work for the Tübingen-Südstadt Development Project and from 2001 to 2010 he headed the Office of Urban Rehabilitation for the Town of Tübingen, Germany. In April 2010, he took office as Mayor for Urban Building, Planning and Development and in 2018 he was reelected for a second period of eight years. Since the 90’s the University Town of Tübingen has worked with a special strategy for urban development. The city purchases brownfield areas like former military barracks or abandoned factories, develops them within their own department and sells the ground to diverse private building cooperatives. With this long-term strategy, Tübingen has gained a lot of experiences in the field of co-housing and self-organized building, small-scaled urban development and neighbourhood diversity. In the last fifteen years a lot of German and European cities have been inspired by the Tübingen way.

CATHERINE LEVITEN-REID – Dr. Catherine Leviten-Reid researches social economy, social care and housing, much of which is community-based. Her work has been published in journals including Community Development, VOLUNTAS: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations and the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly. From 2010-2016, she was a co-investigator in a SSHRC-funded Community University Research Alliance on co-operatives and her current research is supported by the Homelessness Partnering Strategy. Dr. Catherine Leviten-Reid is an Associate Professor in Community Economic Development at Cape Breton University.

FRED DEVEAUX – Fred Deveaux is the Executive Director of the Cape Breton Community Housing Association and Community Homeless Shelter. He is a member of the Community Advisory Board on Homelessness, Chair of the Cape Breton Association of Youth Homelessness and Programs, a member of the Affordable Housing and Homelessness Working Group. He also has over 15 years’ experience in the Social Enterprise, housing, and Mental Health sectors.
